Passage one
Surprising new research suggests it can actually be good to feel bad at work , and that feeling good in the workplace can lead to negative outcomes .
The study of emotions in the workplace, edited by University of Liverpool researchers Drs. Dirk Lindebaum and Peter Jordan ,is the topic of a Special Issue of the journal Human Relations.
They found that the commonly—held assumption that positivity in the workplace produces positive outcomes, while negative emotions lead to negative outcomes, may be in need for reconsideration. This is partly due to this assumption failing to take into account the differences in work contexts which effect outcomes. For instance, anger does not always lead to negative outcomes and can be used as a force for good through acting upon injustices. In some cases, anger can be considered
a force for good if motivated by perceived violations of moral standards.
An employee, for example, could express anger construtibely after a manager has treated a fellow worker unfairly.
In such cases, anger can be useful to prevent these acts of injustice from repeating themselves in the future.
Likewise, being too positive in the workplace, rather than resulting in greater well-being and greater productibity, can lead to complacency(自满) and superficiality.
One article within the issue also finds that, within team situations, negativity can have a good affect, leading to less consensus and therefore greater discussion amongst workers which enhances team effectinevess.
An intersting contradiction is identified in another study of the special issue. Here, people derive satisfaction from doing “good” in the context of helplines by providing support to people in times of emotional distress.
However, they are negatively affected by their line of work due to people shunning them in social situations (e.g.,since they might catch the emotional taint they attribute to the profession of the helpline workers).

Passage two
The stress of organizing a big wedding can leave many couples at breaking point, as they battle to coordinate(协调;配合)a celebration on a scale which would tax even professional event planners. But couple wrestling with 150-seat table plans should take heart, for new research suggests that bigger weddings predict more successful marriages.
A study by the University of Virginia in the US, found that couples who had laeger ceremonies had higher-quality marriages.
Although cynics (愤世嫉俗者) may argue that people who can afford an opulent wedding are likely to be financially secure, and therefore happier, the researchers claim that the correlation remains even when controlling for wealth.
They believe that marrying in front of a large number of people demonstrates greater commitment to the union while also discouraging divorce.
“There is some reason to belive that having more witnesses at a wedding may actually strengthen marital quality ”, said lead author Dr Galena Rhoades.
“We try to keep our present attitudes and behaviors in line with our past conduct. The desire for consistency is likely enhanced by public expressions of intention.
“Weddings may foster support for the new marriage from within a couple’s network of friends and family. Those who hold a formal wedding are likely to have stronger social networks in the first place.”
The report is part of the ongoing National Marriage Project in the US which has been studying what makes marriages work since 1997.
56.What can we learn from the first paragraph?
A. Organizing a big wedding is not easy.
B. A big wedding is always organized by professional event plannners
C. Most couples do not take heart when they are preparing for the weddings
D. MOST couples cannot bear the stress of weddings
